15. National Lampoon’s Category Meeting

It’s clear that Hughes ‘ first screenplay, Class Reunion, was accurate. It isn’t entirely certain of its toes, making flimsy quips that don’t usually work out. The strategy to sitcom doesn’t very labor, and the unusual one-liners stick out like a tender fingers. The comedy focuses on the characters rather than organically evolving from them, something that Hughes would eventually master in abundance. In an odd and awkward way, the script draws inspiration from the comical potential of silly characters and bizarre circumstances, like in the case of” Weekend at Bernie’s.”

14. Somewhat Wonderful

Hughes apologized for Pretty in Pink in Some Kind of Wonderful. Instead, he wrote a gender-flipped story where a young man ( Eric Stoltz ), ends up falling for his best friend after becoming aware of her hidden feelings. Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson, who are both sweet, unattainable Lea Thompson, who are both excellent examples of how skillfully Hughes wrote about people struggling to identify who they are, especially teenagers. Despite being a transparent amendment, the gender reversal works a little better and the script has its moments, but Some Kind of Wonderful also feels overly familiar and could have benefitted from being more distinct. It is evident by the script that he was disappointed that he didn’t get to go through with his original plan for Andie to wind up with her best friend Ducky, as pushy and obsessive as the young man could be.

13. European Vacation

In this installment of the National Lampoon Vacation series, Clark Griswold ( Chevy Chase ) and his family travel to Europe. Clark manages to keep the locals entertained even as he muddles his way through a number of awkward tourist entanglements, which is endearingly effective. The provincialism of the Griswolds is presented with a less heavy hand than the film could have gone for, and it works to its advantage. Although the Vacation film has some of the least notable elements, including a Sound of Music parody, Ellen’s unintentional porn star status, and lederhosen-heavy polka dancing, are memorable. The film’s loose, easy delivery of humor keeps it afloat despite the numerous stereotypes about and repeated rehash of old jokes.

12. She is expecting a child.

Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern, both of whom are in She’s Having a Baby, warm things up in a real script that is tripped up by shenanigans and cliches. The story about a young man having to face the realities of partnership after a romantic courtship is a more hefty tale than Hughes ‘ usual fare, and the mature story manages to land- despite a bit of silliness here and there. There are moments that don’t feel like typical Hughes movies, such as the fantasy sequences, which are mildly amusing but occasionally confusing and distracting. The movie excels when it is honest, like many of Hughes ‘ most enduring works. In a climactic sequence when Bacon witnesses McGovern undergoing a difficult and frightening labor to the sounds of Kate Bush’s plaintive” This Woman’s Work By establishing Screen Rant as your preferred resource, you can stay on top of our human-written, industry-leading articles.
